International distributor Balanga announced its first major distribution agreements for the documentary “Beasts of the Colosseum,” a historical film examining the Venationes of Ancient Rome. The acquisition by ZDF/Terra X in Germany, SVT in Sweden and Radio-Canada marks the beginning of the project’s international rollout.
Produced by Antoine Henriquet’s AH! Production and Jean-Luc Berlot’s Adline for Novo 19 in France in association with Mediaset in Italy, the documentary examines the animal battles that took place in the Roman Colosseum, where thousands of exotic creatures were captured and transported across the empire to participate in staged combat spectacles. The project employs both extensive historical research and artificial intelligence-generated reenactments to visualize these events, covering topics including animal capture expeditions, logistics systems, and arena staging.
Christophe Bochnacki, President of Balanga, characterized the film as representative of a new generation of history documentaries enabled by AI technology, stating that the medium allows previously economically infeasible stories to reach audiences with enhanced visual immersion. The documentary explores the transition from animals being studied to being packaged and consumed as public entertainment.
Producer Enora Contant noted that the production relied on collaboration with historical experts to verify details of settings, costumes, animals, props and actions depicted in AI-generated sequences. The reenactments required extensive creative direction to address technical limitations of generative AI in shot duration, complex movements and character continuity. Contant indicated that AI provides historical documentaries with visual capabilities previously limited to higher-budget fiction productions, though emphasized that the technology serves as a tool rather than replacing traditional documentary practices or directorial vision.
The documentary premiered out of competition at the Cannes AI Film Festival and was scheduled for screening to international buyers at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre on September 8.
