Battery tech: Europe hopes to make up ground in battery industry

Europe’s battery industry has recently experienced setbacks, with major companies like Northvolt and Morrow filing for bankruptcy. Amid concerns about the continent losing ground to competitors, particularly China, European firms are increasingly turning to nanotechnology innovations at the nanometer scale to develop advanced battery components.

Dutch company LeydenJar has developed a plasma deposition technique to create ultra-thin silicon anodes that resist cracking and degradation. According to the company’s chief executive, this approach can improve battery life, charging speed, and energy density by up to 50 percent. The firm plans to begin commercial-scale production at the end of 2026, following a decade-long development period. LeydenJar attributes its competitive advantage partly to its location in Eindhoven, a hub for semiconductor technology expertise that can be applied to battery manufacturing.

Another Dutch startup, Powall, is pursuing a complementary strategy by developing nanocoating technology for battery powder materials using atomic layer deposition. This technique, also borrowed from semiconductor manufacturing, aims to protect new battery materials from degradation while enabling next-generation performance improvements. Both companies are focusing on specific components rather than entire battery production, and both maintain commercial relationships with Asian customers.

Industry analysts note that securing a critical position within the battery supply chain could be strategically important for Europe. However, experts caution that China is actively working to develop domestic alternatives for advanced technologies and reduce dependence on external suppliers. Alexander Brown, an analyst at Berlin-based Merics, suggests Europe’s traditional strength in producing high-quality, specialized products could help it compete globally, though the competitive landscape remains uncertain.
