Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group has received 20 feeding and nesting boxes constructed by prisoners at HMP La Moye in St Brelade. The boxes were built using reclaimed pallet timber as part of a vocational training initiative at the facility.
Peter Gould, the prison’s vocational manager, highlighted the dual benefits of the project. The work provides inmates with carpentry skills applicable to future employment while fostering a sense of contribution to the community. Dru Burdon of the hedgehog preservation group explained that the collaboration began through a chance encounter between a prison officer and a veterinary professional involving an injured hedgehog. Following this meeting, templates for both feeding and nesting boxes were provided to the prison. Earlier in August, all 20 boxes had been distributed to the charity, with the feeding boxes selling out at £20 each and most nesting boxes at £25 each priced for public purchase.
The hedgehog box project forms part of a broader vocational program at the facility. Other initiatives include refurbishing bicycles for donation to Age Concern Jersey, restoring memorial benches, cultivating plants and vegetables for kitchen use and charitable distribution, and developing wildlife habitats. Prison leadership expressed satisfaction with the positive community impact of these programs and the recognition they receive.
