
A new report from the University of Exeter and the Earthshot prize identifies environmental solutions most likely to reach positive tipping points—thresholds where sustainable technologies or practices become progressively cheaper, more prevalent, or politically popular, creating self-propelling momentum for change.
The analysis designates clean electricity as the highest-leverage transition globally. As solar and wind power costs decline, they accelerate adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and cleaner industrial processes while reducing air pollution and driving additional demand for renewable energy. The research notes that solar and wind power have already achieved positive tipping points in numerous major markets, with reduced costs attracting sustained investment and expansion.
The report examines 51 priority areas across five environmental objectives: protecting nature, cleaning air, reviving oceans, eliminating waste, and addressing climate change. Coordinated policies supporting clean power, transport, and heating could accelerate tipping points in these sectors by two to eight years, as progress in one domain increases demand for clean electricity and drives down costs across multiple areas. Clean cooking and household energy solutions are also approaching critical thresholds in some regions through pay-as-you-go models and decentralized solar systems, potentially benefiting the approximately 2.1 billion people currently relying on solid fuels for cooking.
The report identifies transforming global commodity supply chains as another high-impact intervention. A relatively small number of companies, banks, and regulators control major commodities including beef, soy, palm oil, timber, cocoa, and coffee—products driving much of the world’s tropical deforestation. Aligning regulatory standards across major markets such as the EU, China, the UK, and the US could make deforestation-free products the global norm.
Research highlights methane emissions reduction as one of the fastest available mechanisms for limiting peak warming, since methane accounts for approximately 30 percent of warming experienced so far but persists in the atmosphere for only about 12 years. The report also notes significant financing misalignment, with approximately $7.3 trillion annually flowing to nature-degrading activities compared to roughly $220 billion directed toward nature-based solutions.
