
Scientists have identified clean electricity as the most impactful environmental solution capable of triggering widespread sustainable change, according to a new analysis of climate and environmental interventions.
The report, produced by the University of Exeter with the Earthshot Prize, examines “positive tipping points” — thresholds where sustainable technologies become increasingly affordable, widespread, or politically popular, allowing progress to accelerate independently. The analysis covers 51 priority areas across five environmental goals: protecting nature, cleaning the air, reviving oceans, eliminating waste, and addressing climate change. Researchers determined that cheaper solar and wind power can accelerate transformation beyond the energy sector by improving the economics of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and cleaner industrial processes while simultaneously reducing air pollution.
The report identifies several other high-impact interventions. Coordinated policies supporting clean power, transport, and heating could advance positive tipping points by two to eight years, the research suggests. Transforming global commodity supply chains represents another significant opportunity, as a relatively small number of companies, banks, and regulators control trade in products including beef, soy, palm oil, timber, cocoa, and coffee that drive tropical deforestation. Aligning policies across major markets could make deforestation-free products the global standard. Clean cooking and household energy solutions are approaching tipping points in some countries through pay-as-you-go models and decentralized solar power, benefiting approximately 2.1 billion people who currently rely on solid fuels for cooking.
Methane reduction emerges as one of the fastest levers for limiting peak warming, as the gas accounts for roughly 30% of current warming while remaining in the atmosphere for only about 12 years. Modern satellite and drone technology can now detect previously invisible methane leaks, enabling relatively inexpensive interventions to affect temperature within a decade.
A significant challenge remains in global investment allocation. Africa receives less than 2% of global clean energy investment despite possessing 60% of the world’s best solar resources. Additionally, approximately $7.3 trillion flows annually to nature-degrading activities compared with $220 billion for nature-based solutions, according to data cited in the report.
