Much of the improvement stems from infrastructure investments across the country. Numerous airports have recently completed or are actively constructing new terminals and gates designed to handle expanding passenger demand. Facilities such as those at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport, Kansas City International, and Pittsburgh International exemplify this modernization trend. These new structures typically feature larger spaces, enhanced natural lighting, and improved passenger amenities, though they require substantial financial commitments to develop.
J.D. Power’s Mike Taylor, managing director of travel, hospitality and retail, noted the direct correlation between capital investment and passenger perception. He emphasized that airports typically need to invest at least a billion dollars to meaningfully enhance the traveler experience. This threshold reflects the substantial costs associated with building modern facilities that meet contemporary expectations.
The study’s airport rankings by passenger volume revealed distinct leaders in each category. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International topped the rankings among the largest facilities, which process more than 33 million passengers annually. Tampa International achieved the highest score for the mid-size category, serving between 10 million and 32.9 million flyers yearly. Charleston International in South Carolina earned top marks among smaller airports that accommodate 4.5 million to 9.9 million passengers per year.
