Tilray, a US cannabis and drinks company, acquired BrewDog for £33m in March after the Scottish craft brewer entered administration following five years of financial losses and workplace controversies. The company’s founder James Watt faced accusations of fostering a toxic work environment in 2021, apologized for some conduct, and departed in 2024.
Tilray’s chief executive Irray Simon announced the company is committing more than £50m to enhance BrewDog’s operations across multiple areas. The investment includes workforce improvements with salary increases implemented during the year, development of new beer products, and significant capital expenditure at the brewery in Aberdeenshire aimed at quality assurance and production consistency. Simon indicated that over £1m worth of beer failing quality standards had been discarded as part of quality control efforts.
Administrators reported that creditors are owed approximately £190m with expectations of receiving less than full repayment. Tilray has assumed responsibility for certain supplier payments to maintain operational continuity on essential items. The acquisition included BrewDog’s brand assets, intellectual property, UK brewing facilities, and 11 bar locations. The transaction rendered shares worthless for more than 200,000 crowdfunding investors, though these individuals retain benefits including discounted products and were invited to participate in brand relaunch activities.
Simon stated the company views itself as a long-term investor pursuing growth opportunities and is evaluating acquisitions of additional British craft beer brands for its portfolio. He also indicated potential interest in restarting BrewDog’s closed distillery operations if market conditions prove favorable. Tilray reopened five previously shuttered locations from the original chain and plans additional openings in premium locations, departing from the previous ownership’s broader expansion approach.
The new ownership has launched marketing initiatives distancing the brand from its previous leadership, including an advertising campaign featuring the phrase “choose craft.” Tilray committed publicly to implementing sensible workplace practices, community engagement, and people-focused management approaches moving forward.
