The automotive manufacturer is collaborating with Denver-based Peak Energy to develop sodium-ion battery cells intended for energy storage systems and electric vehicles. This partnership focuses on substituting Chinese-dominated materials like lithium and ferrous sulfate with domestically abundant alternatives such as sodium derived from soda ash. GM expects to begin commercial production of these sodium-ion cells around 2029, while simultaneously producing other battery chemistries through existing joint ventures that currently incorporate Chinese materials in undisclosed quantities.

China’s dominance in battery production remains substantial, with the International Energy Agency reporting the nation produces approximately 85 percent of the world’s EV battery cathode active material and over 90 percent of anode active material. The country also maintains about 80 percent control of overall battery production. In contrast, Ford Motor has licensed lithium iron phosphate battery technology from Chinese company CATL for its electric vehicle and energy storage initiatives, drawing scrutiny from the Trump administration’s Transportation Secretary.

Kelty emphasized GM’s strategy of developing superior alternative technologies rather than competing directly with established Chinese supply chains. The company is investing $900 million in new battery laboratory facilities at its global technology campus near Detroit, including a 500,000-square-foot prototyping and manufacturing facility scheduled to begin operations later this year. Industry analysts note that establishing a fully domestic battery supply chain will require several years, though experts suggest domesticating lithium iron phosphate materials production remains feasible alongside sodium-ion development.
