Researchers first set a peak warming limit and then calculated what level of methane cuts would be required to meet that target alongside existing net-zero CO2 commitments. Their analysis found that even with ambitious national net-zero targets absent significant methane reductions, peak warming would exceed 1.85C—above what many consider consistent with the Paris Agreement’s “well-below 2C” goal.

For a 2050 net-zero CO2 scenario, methane emissions would need to fall at least 69% by 2050 relative to 2020 levels to limit warming to 1.7C. Under greenhouse gas net-zero targets, a 63% reduction would be required. Currently, methane emissions are projected to increase approximately 20% by 2050 under existing policies, which would result in peak warming exceeding 2C even if CO2 reaches net-zero.

The researchers note that only Japan, Mexico, and South Korea currently specify dedicated methane targets. They propose that countries and organizations establish warming limits first, then determine minimum required methane reductions accordingly, rather than relying on cost-effectiveness assumptions that may not reflect real-world policy implementation.
