The smoke generated by these events presents acute health risks, with research linking exposure to increased respiratory attacks, hospitalizations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, elevated use of respiratory medications, and adverse effects on mental health and birth outcomes. One study cited in the report attributed nearly 100,000 annual deaths between 2010 and 2018 to the tripling of wildfires since the 1990s.
Ground-level ozone pollution represents a second major threat identified in the report, particularly during intense and prolonged heatwaves. Ozone acts as a powerful oxidizing agent that damages lung tissue, triggers inflammation, and can lead to circulatory and cardiac complications. According to the findings, approximately one in five deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in heavily polluted regions is now attributable to long-term ozone exposure.
The report highlights fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, as both a direct health hazard and a climate threat. These microscopic particles penetrate deep into lungs and bloodstream, originating from fossil fuel combustion, agriculture, heating, transport, wildfires, and dust storms. Once suspended in the atmosphere as aerosol, these particles modify cloud properties and brightness, affecting planetary climate. When they settle, particularly when black carbon deposits on snow and ice, they reduce surface reflectivity and accelerate warming.
WMO officials stressed that addressing air quality and climate change requires integrated approaches, noting that reducing greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously reduces air-degrading pollution. The organization emphasized that comprehensive global reduction in fossil fuel burning represents the most effective solution to address both challenges simultaneously.
