Historical analysis cited in the report attributes nearly 100,000 annual deaths between 2010 and 2018 to the tripling of wildfire frequency since the 1990s.
Ground-level ozone pollution presents an additional concern, particularly during intense and prolonged heatwaves typical of recent summer seasons. As a powerful oxidant, ozone damages lung tissue upon inhalation, causing inflammation and circulatory complications that can develop into cardiovascular disease. Current data suggests that roughly one in five deaths attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in heavily polluted regions result from long-term ozone exposure.
The report highlights how fine particulate matter—microscopic particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers suspended in air—creates compounding climate and health impacts. Once airborne, these aerosols modify cloud properties and brightness, altering climate effects. When particles such as black carbon settle on snow and ice surfaces, they reduce reflectivity and accelerate melting, intensifying global warming. This mechanism creates a reinforcing cycle where warming climates increase fire and dust emissions, which deposit on snow and ice, accelerating melt and further warming.
WMO officials stressed that addressing climate change and air quality simultaneously offers the most effective solution, as reducing greenhouse gas emissions automatically decreases air quality degrading substances. The organization called for comprehensive global efforts to reduce fossil fuel burning and greenhouse gas emissions to break these interconnected cycles.
