Ground-level ozone pollution, exacerbated by prolonged and intense heatwaves, presents another critical concern. In heavily polluted regions, roughly one in five deaths from COPD are now attributed to long-term ozone exposure.

The report highlights how fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, creates a dangerous feedback mechanism affecting both human health and climate systems. These microscopic particles can penetrate deep into lungs and bloodstreams while also altering cloud properties and brightness when suspended in the atmosphere. When deposited on snow and ice surfaces, particles like black carbon reduce reflectivity and accelerate melting, reinforcing global warming. WMO officials emphasized that addressing climate change and air quality requires integrated approaches, noting that reducing greenhouse gas emissions simultaneously reduces air quality-degrading substances. They identified comprehensive reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel combustion as the most effective solution.
