Huawei copies Samsung’s privacy display in its latest trifold

Huawei unveiled its latest trifold smartphone, the Mate XT 2, in China, incorporating design elements and features that parallel recent Samsung innovations in the foldable phone segment. The device represents a notable shift in the company’s trifold strategy compared to its previous models.

The original Mate XT, which debuted in China in late 2024 and subsequently became available internationally, employed an accordion-style folding mechanism that eliminated the need for a separate cover display. However, this design left portions of the delicate flexible screen exposed to potential damage. The intermediate XT models maintained this approach, but the XT 2 departs from this direction by adopting an inward-folding configuration similar to Samsung’s trifold variant, where both edges of the 10.2-inch foldable display fold inward for added protection.

A notable addition to the XT 2 is the incorporation of a privacy-focused OLED display technology, previously exclusive to Samsung’s S26 Ultra. The privacy display functions by activating pixels that emit light at constrained angles, rendering the screen nearly opaque when viewed from the sides while remaining legible when viewed directly. This feature comes as an optional upgrade available only with the highest storage configuration of 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, requiring an additional ¥1,000 payment.

The XT 2 also incorporates Huawei’s latest Kirin 9050 Pro processor, improved water resistance rated at IP59, and a triple rear camera system. The device launched today in China with an initial price of ¥19,999. Plans for international distribution have not been confirmed. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold was discontinued shortly following its initial release last year, though reports indicate the company continues development on a successor model.
