Hyundai Motor is projected to surpass Ford Motor in quarterly sales during the third quarter, according to a forecast released Thursday by Cox Automotive. The South Korean automaker is expected to record 511,421 units sold, representing a 6.5% increase from the same period last year, while Ford is anticipated to report 504,172 vehicles sold, a 7.1% decline year-over-year. This outcome would position Hyundai as the third-largest automaker in the U.S. market, behind General Motors and Toyota Motor.
The shift reflects broader momentum for Hyundai, which operates alongside its luxury Genesis brand and corporate affiliate Kia. Together, these brands have expanded their presence significantly in recent months. Ford disputed the forecast’s implications, noting it continues to lead Hyundai through August and pointed to the competitive advantages Korean manufacturers enjoy through tariffs, currency dynamics, labor costs, and supply chain considerations that make production in South Korea more economical than domestic U.S. manufacturing.
Analysts identified a key competitive disadvantage for American automakers: limited hybrid vehicle offerings. General Motors currently offers hybrids only on its Corvette, while Ford provides hybrid versions of the Maverick and F-150 trucks. By contrast, Toyota, the hybrid market leader, has been narrowing its sales gap with General Motors and could potentially overtake the company in annual sales this year. Cox raised its 2026 sales forecast by approximately 2% to 16.1 million units, citing overall market resilience.
Fuel prices at the national average of $4.48 per gallon are dampening consumer interest in larger trucks and sport utility vehicles, categories essential to Detroit automaker revenue streams. Complicating matters, General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis have recently doubled down on gas-intensive V-8 engines for their larger vehicles following regulatory changes. Cox predicts General Motors will see a 5.2% sales decline to 671,706 units in the third quarter, while Toyota is expected to gain 2.2% to 642,707 units. Stellantis is forecast to experience a 1.3% quarterly decline.
