ID’s ‘O.J. Unseen: Exploitation of Evil’ Excavates O.J. Simpson’s Thwarted Reality TV Comeback

Investigation Discovery has released a four-part docuseries examining “Juiced,” a reality television show from 2006 that was intended to serve as a comeback vehicle for O.J. Simpson. The hidden-camera prank program, which aired temporarily through video-on-demand before being pulled, featured Simpson orchestrating various pranks on unsurprised members of the public. The series was ultimately shelved after families of murder victims Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman protested its development, derailing a planned DVD release.

Executive producers Eric Day and Mark Koops created the documentary using more than 60 hours of behind-the-scenes footage from the original show’s production, along with interviews from cast and crew members who participated in the project. The finished pranks largely consisted of people reacting to Simpson’s unexpected appearances, with segments including Simpson posing as a used car salesman negotiating sales of a white Ford Bronco and a rap music video sequence. Director Rebecca Halpern compiled the material into a series exploring how the project was conceived, produced, and ultimately abandoned.

“Juiced” emerged during the mid-2000s reality television boom, an era that included numerous high-concept and exploitative programs. Producer Rick Mahr, who had established a business selling straight-to-video content, conceptualized the show and recruited Simpson as its star. The docuseries features interviews with Mahr and director Todd Lewis, who express varying perspectives on their involvement, ranging from no regrets to substantial remorse about the project’s nature.

The documentary also captures behind-the-scenes moments that reveal interactions between Simpson and crew members, including instances where Simpson discusses his trial and celebrity rehabilitation. Producers describe scenes that feel particularly compelling in retrospect, including moments where Simpson appears positioned to discuss the murders that made his name infamous. The series premiered on Investigation Discovery on a Monday evening.
