IEA Chief: Electrification Still Energy's Top Bet Despite AI Fears

Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, affirmed on Thursday that electrification continues to serve as the primary focus for worldwide energy investment. Speaking at a news conference in Seoul, Birol highlighted that electricity demand is expanding at a rate three times greater than total energy demand, anchored by strong capital market support.

While acknowledging challenges, Birol characterized electrification as a necessary path forward despite recent concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and its potential implications. He noted that higher costs for electrification infrastructure and slower-than-needed grid expansion relative to electricity demand growth could present obstacles to achieving broader global electrification targets.

According to the IEA’s latest analysis, global electricity demand is rising at its fastest pace in 15 years, driven by AI infrastructure development, advanced manufacturing, and accelerating electrification trends. The agency projects power demand will increase by more than 3.5 percent annually on average through the end of the decade. Emerging markets, particularly China, India, and Southeast Asia, are expected to account for approximately 80 percent of additional power demand by 2030, while advanced economies are experiencing renewed electricity demand growth following 15 years of stagnation, fueled largely by data center expansion and advanced manufacturing.

In the United States specifically, electricity demand increased by 2.1 percent in 2025 and is projected to grow by nearly 2 percent annually through 2030, with data center expansion anticipated to drive approximately half of this growth.
