The 31st Busan International Film Festival has announced a comprehensive guest roster and program schedule ahead of the event’s opening later this year. The festival will feature appearances by prominent international and regional figures in cinema, including French actress Isabelle Huppert, American actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, Malaysian-British actor Michelle Yeoh and Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu.
Yeoh will receive the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award during her return visit to the festival after 15 years. Additional notable attendees include Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui, Indonesian director Christine Hakim, Iranian director Majid Majidi and a substantial delegation of Japanese performers and filmmakers. The gala presentation section will showcase five films with their directors and casts present. These include Kore-eda’s “Look Back,” adapted from manga, Marc Fitoussi’s “All About Corinne” with Huppert, and “It’s My Time,” which casts Yeoh in a lead role.
The festival’s main Asian cinema competition will feature 14 films representing Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Four of these entries are directorial debuts, and four are from female filmmakers. The competition includes works by established and emerging directors from across the region.
Beyond the competition section, the festival will present 28 additional titles in its Window on Asian Cinema program and 35 films in its Icons section dedicated to works by established masters. The Icons lineup includes films from directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Werner Herzog, David Lowery and Brad Bird, alongside works by Korean and Taiwanese auteurs.
The festival will run Oct. 6-15 at the Busan Cinema Center and various venues throughout the city. The concurrent Asian Contents & Film Market will operate Oct. 10-13.
