Isle of Man doctors vote to take strike action in row over pay

Medical professionals on the Isle of Man have voted to pursue strike action amid an ongoing compensation dispute with their healthcare employer. The British Medical Association reported that 104 of its 168 eligible members participated in a strike ballot, with 95% voting in favor of industrial action. The union contends that physicians have experienced a real-terms pay reduction of 29% since 2008, despite recent salary adjustments.

Manx Care has indicated it remains optimistic that its latest pay proposal, presented on 18 June, will gain acceptance from the medical workforce. A separate ballot examining this improved offer is scheduled to conclude the following week. Officials have not yet announced when any strike action might commence.

The strike vote announcement comes as Manx Care undergoes leadership transitions. Chief executive Teresa Cope, who has directed the organization since its establishment in 2021, is departing her position. Healthcare provider chair Wendy Reid subsequently announced her own resignation, set to take effect during the summer season.

Doctors on the island previously suspended a planned work stoppage in January 2025 following a negotiated settlement covering two financial years beginning from 2023-24. That agreement provided an 8% pay increase for the initial year, followed by a 6% raise from April 2024 and an additional 2% increase from February of last year. The BMA maintains that despite these raises, physicians’ compensation in real terms remains substantially lower than 2008 levels.

Dr. Prakash Thiagarajan, chair of the Isle of Man Medical Society, characterized the recent vote as evidence that conditions demand immediate change. Medical professionals report experiencing declining morale related to perceived undervaluation and mounting apprehension regarding the profession’s viability on the island, he noted.
