The Freyas, a new awards ceremony recognizing Nordic film and television talent, has announced its inaugural honorees and winners ahead of its first event. The ceremony will take place in Helsinki on Sept. 22, bringing together creative professionals and industry figures from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland.

Swedish director Lasse Hallström will receive recognition as a pioneering Nordic filmmaker who established a successful international career spanning both European and American productions. His filmography includes acclaimed works such as “My Life as a Dog,” which earned two Oscar nominations in 1985, along with films including “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” “Chocolat” and “The Hundred-Foot Journey.” Swedish actress Lena Olin will also be honored, with a career spanning multiple decades in both European and American cinema and television, including performances in films by Ingmar Bergman and Philip Kaufman.

Several acting awards will be distributed to recognize performers across film and television formats. Trine Dyrholm of Denmark receives an Outstanding Nordic Actor award in a series category for her role in “The Danish Woman,” a co-production involving Iceland, Denmark and France. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson of Iceland will accept an award in the same category for his work in the Icelandic-Finnish series “Reykjavik Fusion,” which he also executive produced. Fares Fares, a Swedish-Lebanese actor, is being recognized with an Outstanding Nordic Actor award in a film category for his performance in “Arkipelag.”

The awards also acknowledge emerging talent and performers contributing to Nordic representation on global platforms. Laura Birn of Finland is recognized for her international breakthrough, including her role in Apple TV+’s “Foundation” series. Thea Sofie Loch Næss of Norway receives recognition as a young talent with growing international presence, while Icelandic actress Ebba Katrín Finnsdóttir is honored for her work across multiple productions in Nordic and international markets.

According to awards founder Kirpi Uimonen, The Freyas aims to celebrate the collective cultural achievement of Nordic nations and the professionals who have advanced Nordic storytelling internationally, despite the relatively small individual markets that comprise the region.
