Lowe’s has announced a drone delivery service developed in partnership with DoorDash and Wing, marking the first drone delivery offering in the home improvement retail sector. The service provides customers access to more than 100 products delivered as quickly as 20 minutes, with orders placed directly through the DoorDash platform for eligible customers.
A pilot program is currently operating in Matthews, North Carolina. The drones are capable of transporting approximately 2.5 pounds per flight and operate within a 5-mile radius of the store location. Lowe’s plans to expand the service beyond the initial pilot site if the program proves successful.
Lowe’s Chief Information and Artificial Intelligence Officer Seemantini Godbole stated that the drone delivery service addresses a common customer pain point: homeowners and contractors frequently discover mid-project that they lack essential materials. The service allows customers to continue work without interruption by receiving needed items rapidly without leaving their job site or residence. Godbole emphasized the company’s iterative approach to the program, noting that teams are observing customer and employee feedback daily to make adjustments.
The launch positions Lowe’s alongside other major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Uber Eats that have implemented drone delivery services. However, Lowe’s distinguishes itself as the first in its category to offer this capability. The company is working with its partners to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and safety requirements. Godbole noted that drone delivery is part of a broader technology strategy that includes enhanced same-day express delivery and artificial intelligence integration for store operations, with the overall objective of creating seamless customer experiences.
