Lowe’s has announced a new drone delivery service developed in collaboration with DoorDash and Wing, an Alphabet subsidiary. The initiative represents the first drone delivery offering in the home improvement retail sector and aims to address customer needs during home and construction projects.
The pilot program is currently operating in Matthews, North Carolina, where customers can place orders through DoorDash with drone delivery as a fulfillment option for eligible locations. Each drone flight carries approximately 2.5 pounds of merchandise and operates within a 5-mile radius of the store. The service can complete deliveries in as little as 20 minutes and provides access to more than 100 products. Lowe’s has indicated plans to expand the program beyond the initial test location if results prove successful.
According to Seemantini Godbole, Lowe’s chief information and artificial intelligence officer, the drone service addresses a specific customer pain point—the need for forgotten or additional materials mid-project without leaving the job site. Godbole emphasized that the company is actively monitoring the pilot through daily store visits and collecting feedback from associates and DoorDash partners to enable rapid adjustments as needed.
The drone delivery initiative places Lowe’s among a growing number of major retailers implementing aerial delivery systems. Amazon, Walmart, and Uber Eats currently operate drone delivery programs. However, the technology has faced opposition in certain regions due to concerns about noise, privacy, and airspace management. Lowe’s stated it is ensuring compliance with all applicable standards and leveraging the technical expertise of its partners. Godbole noted that drone delivery represents one component of the company’s broader technology strategy, which also includes enhancements to same-day delivery options and artificial intelligence integration for store operations.
