Meta debuts no-camera smart glasses and virtual reality spectacles

Meta introduced a collection of new wearable devices during its Connect conference, including smart glasses and virtual reality spectacles aimed at addressing market concerns and expanding the company’s presence in the emerging wearables sector.

The company unveiled Ray-Ban Meta Audio AI glasses, which feature microphones and speakers but no camera, available in Clubmaster and Burbank styles. These audio-focused glasses address growing privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped wearables, though Meta stated development began several years prior. The devices offer up to 12 hours of battery life and are priced at £319 (€349/A$529). The company also released Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 smart glasses with cameras, featuring improved battery life extending to nine hours, along with new branded styles developed in partnership with Lisa. All smart glasses include LED indicators that activate during recording, and Meta announced enhanced tampering detection features.

Meta expanded availability of its Ray-Ban Display smart glasses internationally, with models featuring a virtual display in the right lens. These glasses became available in the UK and Canada from 23 September at £749 and CA$1,149 respectively, with planned launches in France, Germany and Italy on 13 October at €899. This marks the first expansion of the Ray-Ban Display line outside the United States since its announcement a year ago.

The company also revealed new virtual reality glasses positioned as a lighter alternative to its Quest VR headsets. Weighing approximately 100g and constructed from magnesium alloy, the glasses feature 5K microOLED screens with sharp visual clarity rivaling high-end competitors. The devices connect via cable to a separate 300g computing unit containing processing power and a three-hour battery, reducing head weight significantly compared to existing models. The glasses support the Quest software library and include eye-tracking and hand-gesture controls, with capability to display multiple virtual windows and mirror computer displays. The Meta VR glasses are priced at $1,299.99 and will launch in spring 2027 across North America, Europe and Asia.
