Governor Gretchen Whitmer directed state resources toward expanded research on the topic in January, leading to the recent funding announcement. Other states highlighted in the federal survey, including Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are already conducting drilling operations for geologic hydrogen.

Michigan’s geography makes it particularly suitable for this research. The state sits atop the Midcontinent Rift, a geological formation created over 1 billion years ago where the North American continent began separating. This formation created the Michigan Basin, with deeper older rock layers near its edges—areas where hydrogen may have naturally formed—positioned close to populated regions such as Detroit and Traverse City.

Existing drilling infrastructure in the state presents an additional advantage for research efforts. Northern Michigan contains numerous oil and natural gas wells and some of the state’s most productive gas fields. Researchers can repurpose this equipment and potentially analyze existing data from past drilling operations to identify hydrogen deposits. State officials are hopeful the initial funding will attract additional federal support, noting that the U.S. Department of Energy allocated approximately $20 million in 2024 for geologic hydrogen-related projects through its Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy program.
