Mikel Gurrea’s Awaited ‘Saints,’ Toplined by ‘The Beloved’ Star Victoria Luengo, Swooped on by M-Appeal (EXCLUSIVE)

Spanish director Mikel Gurrea’s follow-up to his 2022 debut feature “Suro” is set to world premiere in the main competition section of the San Sebastián Festival, running Sept. 18-26. The film, titled “Saints” (“Sants” in Catalan), has been acquired for international sales representation by Berlin-based sales company M-Appeal, which will begin its campaign at the festival.

The production stars Victoria Luengo, who previously worked with Gurrea on “Suro” and appeared opposite Javier Bardem in “The Beloved.” In the film, Luengo plays Lali, a drifter and thief who returns to Barcelona after learning her estranged mother is seriously ill. Once there, she becomes involved with an organized group of church artifact thieves led by a former nun named Rosario, portrayed by Eulàlia Ramon. The narrative explores Lali’s internal conflict between her biological family and her newly formed chosen family, with her character developing from carefree to caring.

Described as a stylish family drama interwoven with heist elements, “Saints” represents an expansion of Gurrea’s artistic scope in terms of visual style, production values, and narrative ambition compared to his debut. The film is produced by Spanish companies Nocturna Pictures, Lastor Media, and Deliris Films in collaboration with Italy’s Kino Produzioni. Co-written with Francisco Kosterlitz, the film concludes with what producers characterize as an uplifting ending.

Gurrea studied at the London Film School, the same institution attended by acclaimed director Carla Simón. M-Appeal’s Maren Kroymann highlighted both the film’s balance of emotional depth with lighter moments and Luengo’s performance as central strengths of the project.
