Mum 'lost trust' in Addenbrooke's after surgeon review

An investigation into the conduct of orthopaedic surgeon Kuldeep Stohr at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge has found that 209 patients experienced harm under her care. Of these cases, 41 were classified as severe, and one patient died. The findings were initially disclosed in a report prepared for the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s board of directors, which was later removed from the trust’s website after media inquiry.

Many of the patients affected were children who underwent procedures under Stohr’s supervision. Family members of affected patients have expressed concerns about the hospital’s handling of the matter and the trustworthiness of subsequent communications. One parent stated that the scale of incidents represented far more than isolated mistakes and noted the additional burden placed on families who witnessed their children require further corrective surgery. Another family member called for a public inquiry into how children received substandard care.

Strohr was suspended from her position and has not worked at the hospital since March 2024, initially for personal reasons. The Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s ongoing review has examined the care of more than 900 patients to date. Hospital leadership acknowledged the situation, with the chief executive stating the trust was deeply sorry and committing to implementing changes to prevent similar occurrences.

The trust’s final findings are anticipated in November, and leadership stated these results will be shared with affected patients and families prior to public release. Legal representatives for families affected described expectations that the final report would be highly critical, citing cases where patients underwent unnecessary major surgery that resulted in prolonged pain without therapeutic benefit. Stohr’s legal representatives have declined to comment on the new report.
