NEW REPORT: Mississippi Power Failing to Lower Costs & Pollution

The Sierra Club released its sixth annual Dirty Truth Report, which evaluates utility companies across the United States based on their progress in retiring coal capacity, planning natural gas infrastructure, and deploying renewable energy resources. Mississippi Power received a score of 44 out of 100 in the assessment.

The broader utility sector underperformed significantly in the evaluation. The 76 utilities assessed collectively earned a score of 7 out of 100, representing an eight-point decline from the previous year’s report and marking the lowest aggregate performance in the report’s history.

According to the report’s methodology and findings, renewable energy sources currently represent the most cost-effective approach to electricity generation, while coal and fossil fuel plants continue to impose substantial economic and public health burdens. Despite these established economic and health advantages, the analysis found that Mississippi Power has not prioritized substantial investments in renewable energy infrastructure, a trend that the report attributes to resulting in elevated electricity costs for consumers, increased environmental pollution, and reduced grid reliability.

Sierra Club officials emphasized concerns about the utility sector’s trajectory. Amy Kelly, manager of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, characterized Mississippi Power’s position within its parent company Southern Company as notable, stating that the subsidiary maintained coal retirements while others did not. Holly Bender, the Sierra Club’s Chief Program Officer, argued that utilities’ delayed transition away from fossil fuels perpetuates expensive bills for customers and worsens pollution-related health impacts. Bender further noted that rising energy demand from data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure is driving utilities toward fossil fuel expansion rather than clean energy deployment, potentially exacerbating cost and emissions concerns.
