The National Football League is pursuing an aggressive international expansion strategy, with nine regular-season games scheduled outside the United States this year. The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams will travel to Melbourne for the league’s inaugural game in Australia, marking the longest distance two NFL teams have traveled for a contest. Additional inaugural matchups will be held in Rio de Janeiro and Paris, while established international markets including London, Madrid, Munich and Mexico City will also host games.
League owners have already approved 10 international games for next year, which represents the maximum permitted under the current collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and its players. The expansion effort reflects commissioner Roger Goodell’s stated goal of eventually hosting up to 16 international games annually and, potentially, establishing a permanent franchise outside the United States.
The NFL’s growth strategy relies heavily on its Global Markets Program, established in 2022, which grants individual teams exclusive international marketing rights in designated regions. Teams function as home teams when games are played in their assigned markets. The Rams hold marketing rights across multiple Pacific regions including Australia, China, Japan and South Korea, while the 49ers control Mexican territories. Other franchises have secured rights reflecting either geographical proximity or ownership preferences, such as the Los Angeles Chargers’ exclusive claim to Greece, based on owner heritage.
Despite these initiatives, obstacles remain. Scheduling games for American primetime audiences creates inconvenient kickoff times internationally, with morning slots in Australia and overnight times in Europe. Previous international broadcasts have generated significantly lower viewership than domestic Sunday contests. The 49ers-Rams game is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. local Melbourne time on a weekday. Player participation presents additional challenges, including lengthy travel requirements and jet lag complications.
As of the current season, 62 regular-season NFL games have been played outside the United States. The league’s success in expanding global interest remains uncertain, particularly given viewership data showing substantially higher domestic engagement compared to international audiences.
