NHS to offer free high-street cholesterol tests in England

The National Health Service in England is rolling out a new program providing complimentary cholesterol screening at community pharmacies, marking the first initiative of its kind globally. The seven-minute finger-prick blood tests will be conducted by pharmacist prescribers at participating high-street locations, with results delivered via email.

Eligible participants include individuals aged 40 to 84 who have not undergone a blood test within the previous year and are not pregnant. Following the blood draw and analysis, pharmacist prescribers will deliver tailored lifestyle guidance and assess whether pharmacological interventions, including statins, may be warranted. Blood pressure monitoring will also be provided as part of the clinical consultation.

The initiative emerged from a successful pilot program in north London conducted by Barts Health NHS trust in collaboration with UCLPartners and Heart UK. Testing 2,493 patients during this trial, the program identified nearly one in five patients (19%) as carrying significant cardiovascular risk over the following decade. Of those assessed, at least 88 individuals subsequently began statin therapy.

The scheme aims to address cardiovascular disease prevention at an earlier stage and improve health outcomes across diverse communities. An initial phase will launch approximately 100 NHS pharmacies throughout England this autumn. Health officials characterize the approach as part of a broader effort to deliver healthcare services closer to patients’ residences and reduce reliance on traditional general practitioner surgeries.

The program was unveiled during the European Society of Cardiology’s annual congress in Munich. Officials emphasize that earlier detection of elevated cholesterol and blood pressure could prevent serious cardiac and cerebrovascular events while reducing demand on NHS resources.
