Nick Clegg could make £30m windfall from datacentre startup Nscale flotation

Nick Clegg, the former UK deputy prime minister, could realize a substantial financial gain from the anticipated flotation of Nscale, a UK-based datacentre company preparing for a listing on the US stock market. Clegg holds more than 917,000 shares in the startup, representing approximately 0.12% ownership. Based on the company’s reported valuation target of up to $35bn, his stake could be worth roughly $42m at that level, though earlier funding rounds valued the company at $14.6bn, which would correspond to a lower figure of approximately $18m.

Sheryl Sandberg, the former Meta executive who also serves on Nscale’s board, holds a 0.25% stake that could reach $88m under the higher valuation scenario. Both board members receive annual retainers of $60,000 from the company. Clegg previously accumulated approximately £24m through share sales related to his former role as president of global affairs at Meta.

Nscale filed its flotation documentation in the US on 18 September and could complete its stock market debut before the year end in New York. The company reported a loss of $1bn during the six-month period ending 30 June against revenues of $140m. Company leadership attributed the losses to substantial capital investments required for its infrastructure operations. Currently, Nscale operates five datacentres across Europe with an additional 12 facilities in various stages of development, including projects in the United States.

Nscale’s chief executive Josh Payne indicated the company aims to capitalize on growing demand for sovereign AI infrastructure, where nations develop independent artificial intelligence models and supporting infrastructure to reduce technological reliance on American or Chinese entities. European officials, including Christine Lagarde of the European Central Bank and former EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager, have advocated for enhanced European AI infrastructure development. Payne characterized Nscale’s British base as advantageous for positioning the company as a trusted partner in Europe’s sovereign AI efforts.
