The U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office established a specialized geothermal research center on the National Laboratory of the Rockies campus in Golden, Colorado on Sept. 3. The facility will leverage expertise across the national laboratory system to accelerate geothermal energy development and deployment throughout the United States.
The center will be led by NLR in partnership with the National Energy Technology Laboratory and will draw on resources from nine additional national laboratories including Argonne, Brookhaven, Idaho, Los Alamos, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Oak Ridge, Pacific Northwest, and Sandia. The South Table Mountain Campus location was selected for its proximity to regions with significant geothermal potential in the western United States.
According to DOE leadership, the center aims to harness the scientific and engineering capabilities of the national laboratory system to unlock domestic geothermal resources, enhance energy independence, and support affordable and secure energy production. An industry advisory board will be established to ensure research priorities align with commercial geothermal development needs and to strengthen partnerships between laboratories and private sector stakeholders.
The Geothermal Center of Excellence represents one of four centers of excellence established by the Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office to enhance collaboration on key functional areas with industry, academia, and federal government partners. Laboratory officials indicated the center will serve as a national hub for coordinating geothermal research and facilitating knowledge sharing among stakeholders working toward expanded geothermal energy deployment.
