Novo CEO tells CNBC why drugmaker is rebranding, needs to 'rethink' obesity strategy

Novo Nordisk announced a corporate rebrand to “Novo” on Monday alongside a significant cultural overhaul, positioning the changes as the start of a new strategic direction for the company. The Danish pharmaceutical firm will present detailed business strategy modifications during its Capital Markets Day event scheduled for September 21. The rebrand incorporates the messaging framework “Lasting Health Starts Now,” which emphasizes that patients should pursue long-term health improvements immediately rather than deferring action.

CEO Mike Doustdar stated in an exclusive CNBC interview that the rebrand and cultural transformation represent an integrated approach to adapt the company’s strategy for the coming decade. He acknowledged that Novo faces competitive pressures and investor expectations regarding new blockbuster medications and sustainable growth trajectories. Doustdar indicated the company must enhance performance across multiple operational areas, including research and development, manufacturing, sales, and marketing to maintain competitiveness in the obesity treatment sector.

Novo’s market position in obesity medications has weakened relative to competitor Eli Lilly, with the company holding 38.8 percent market share compared to Lilly’s 60.9 percent in the second quarter. Company shares have declined approximately 15 percent during the year, though the oral formulation of Wegovy achieved more than 3 million prescriptions as of June. Novo recently discontinued three trials for an experimental cardiovascular therapy, reflecting additional headwinds.

Doustdar characterized the operating environment as fundamentally transformed from a decade earlier, noting that obesity treatment expansion has broadened Novo’s patient population and shifted market dynamics toward a consumer-oriented model where patients initiate and discontinue therapies more frequently than in traditional diabetes management. He emphasized that Novo must increase decision-making velocity and clarity while meeting patients at their point of need. The company established four new cultural principles centered on patient-focused innovation, stakeholder value creation, operational clarity, and unwavering patient safety and ethical standards.

Despite challenges, Novo maintains advantages with Wegovy’s oral version, which achieved rapid uptake ahead of competing products. Doustdar noted Novo has retained significant share of the oral market segment, citing physician assessments that Wegovy demonstrates greater effectiveness than Lilly’s Foundayo alternative, with approximately 17 percent weight loss observed.
