The Pingyao International Film Festival has announced the complete program for its 10th anniversary edition, scheduled to run from Sept. 24-30 in Shanxi province. The festival, founded by director Jia Zhangke, will open with a 4K restoration of Fei Mu’s 1948 film “Spring in a Small Town,” while the Hong Kong dramedy “Good Trip,” directed by Norris Wong Yee Lam and Hoi Wong, will serve as the closing selection. The film marks its mainland China premiere in the role.
The festival’s competitive and showcase sections feature an extensive international program spanning multiple continents. The Hidden Dragons competition includes three world premieres: Malaysian director Kethsvin Chee’s “Dead Tide,” Chengjie Cai’s “Suzhou Quartet,” and Niu Niu’s “Final Payment.” The Crouching Tigers section encompasses works from Colombia, Russia, the Philippines, Mexico, Central Africa, Argentina, and other nations, reflecting the festival’s global reach. Notable entries in the Galas section include Cristian Mungiu’s “Fjord,” which won at Cannes, and James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” both marking Asian premieres.
In recognition of the festival’s decade-long history, organizers have programmed retrospective strands featuring restored classics and tributes to filmmaking legacies. The Pingyao 10 Years·Tributes section pairs the restored “Spring in a Small Town” with Pan Yilin’s documentary “Echoes of Fei Mu,” alongside works by Roberto Rossellini and his son Alessandro. A memorial program includes restored films and presentations dedicated to industry figures, while a separate strand highlights filmmakers who first gained recognition through the festival’s short-film program, tracing their subsequent feature work.
Additional selections feature work by Marie Kreutzer, Na Hong-Jin, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and Fernando Eimbcke, with numerous films making their China or mainland China premieres. Jia Zhangke’s short film “Torino Shadow” will screen during a special presentation, marking its Asian premiere.
