Alma Media Lab, a Miami-based publishing-to-screen company, has announced its slate of projects under the leadership of Francisca Alegría and Fernanda Urrejola, co-showrunners of Prime Video’s “The House of the Spirits.” The company operates on a model that develops books and television series simultaneously in close collaboration with authors, primarily targeting U.S. Hispanic and Latin American markets.
Coca Gómez, co-founder and chief content officer of Alma Media Lab, described the company’s approach as rooted in strategic storytelling developed over 25 years of television experience. Under this model, stories are refined in print, published as books, and then adapted for screen while authors retain creative voice and rights protection. The company launched in January 2026 and has secured development deals with multiple prominent Latin American creators.
Notable projects in development include adaptations of works by bestselling author Carla Guelfenbein, whose novels “In the Distance With You” and “The Nature of Desire” are under exclusive adaptation rights. Additionally, Alma Media Lab holds exclusive rights to a memoir by Federico Arellano, a Colombian jurist and law professor whose book on the Avianca Flight 203 bombing is scheduled for release later this year through Alma Publishing, the company’s imprint, with a corresponding premium series in parallel development.
Another project in development is an audiobook trilogy reimagining “Machos,” a telenovela that achieved widespread distribution across more than 40 countries. This project is a work-for-hire commission for Storytel and RDF Media. Gómez emphasized the potential global reach of these initiatives, noting that approximately 600 million people worldwide speak Spanish.
