Cost considerations also factor into the concern. When ordered through physicians in Australia, tests range up to $400 and are not covered by Medicare. Direct-to-consumer providers charge between $365 and $600, with some offering minimal pre-test screening. Health authorities note that both false positive and false negative results carry risks, as positive results may create unfounded fears of inevitable dementia while negative results might discourage individuals from addressing modifiable risk factors such as exercise levels, cholesterol management, and hearing or vision health.
