San Sebastian Competition Title ‘Border’ Boards Reel Suspects for Global Sales (EXCLUSIVE)

Reel Suspects, a Paris-based international sales company, has acquired worldwide distribution rights to “Border,” the feature directorial debut of Chinese filmmaker Ah Biao. The film will receive its world premiere in the official competition section of the San Sebastián Film Festival, where it will vie for the festival’s top prize, the Golden Shell.

The narrative follows an isolated young miner in a remote town who experiences a transformation when a mysterious woman enters his life. Her arrival disrupts his routines and dormant emotions, leading him to venture into unfamiliar circumstances. However, the woman conceals secrets about her identity. The ensemble cast features Zheyan Li, Feng Qi, Sanming Han, Gang Zheng and Tao Guo in this international co-production involving Hong Kong, the United States, South Korea and Japan.

Ah Biao, originally from Shanxi and currently based in Bangkok, works as a director, screenwriter and cinematographer. His inclusion in the festival’s main competition places him alongside established filmmakers including Mike Leigh, Pablo Larraín, Nicole Garcia and Yeşim Ustaoğlu. Borderless Films produced the project, with Jenny Man Wu leading the producing team alongside Lili Tong, Tyler Hill and Xue Ma.

The film also appears among 24 titles eligible for the Sebastiane Award, presented by Gehitu, a Basque LGBTIQA+ association, to recognize outstanding portrayals of queer life and experiences. According to Reel Suspects CEO Matteo Lovadina, the company views the filmmaker’s work as representative of contemporary Chinese-language cinema’s evolving aesthetic and thematic dimensions. Reel Suspects, founded in 2005, specializes in independent films and emerging directors.
