The SCAD Savannah Film Festival announced that its 29th edition will premiere on October 24 with the Anton Corbijn thriller “A Talent for Murder,” which stars Helen Mirren alongside Alden Ehrenreich. Mirren will receive the festival’s Legend of Entertainment Award at the opening ceremony and participate in a moderated question-and-answer session following the screening.
The film, distributed by Bleecker Street and LD Entertainment, centers on a young man sent by a New York publisher to Switzerland to convince a celebrated author, played by Mirren, to complete one final entry in an acclaimed thriller series. The festival organizers cited Mirren’s extensive career achievements and artistic range as reasons for the honor.
As one of the largest university-affiliated film festivals in the nation and a major entertainment venue for the Southeast, the eight-day event attracts more than 74,000 attendees annually. Programming includes competition entries, feature films, documentaries, animated works, shorts, panel discussions, and workshops held across SCAD’s historic venues. Variety will continue its partnership with the festival through its Pixels and Pencils panel celebrating animated feature directors and its 10 Artisans to Watch initiative recognizing emerging industry professionals.
Mirren’s career encompasses numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for best actress for “The Queen,” along with Tony, Emmy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild honors. She was named a Dame of the British Empire in 2003 and has received the BAFTA Fellowship, the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award, the SAG Life Achievement Award, and the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award. Her recent work spans film, television, and stage projects.
Additional honorees and competing films for the festival will be announced in the following weeks.
