Stephanie Cole: Coronation Street and Doc Martin actress dies aged 84

Stephanie Cole, a British actress whose career spanned television, theatre, and radio, has died at age 84. Her agent confirmed she had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for an extended period prior to her death.

Cole was born in Solihull and trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, making her stage debut at 17 in a production of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. She became widely recognized for her role as Dr Beatrice Mason in the 1980s BBC wartime drama Tenko, which followed British women in Singapore during Japanese occupation. During the same era, she appeared as Mrs Delphine Featherstone in the sitcom Open All Hours alongside Ronnie Barker. Cole later won a television comedy award for her portrayal of Diana Trent in Waiting For God, and cited her performance as Muriel in Alan Bennett’s monologue Soldiering On as one of her proudest achievements.

Throughout her career, Cole accumulated a diverse range of television credits. She played Roy Cropper’s mother Sylvia Goodwin in Coronation Street, a role that earned her a comedy prize at the 2012 British Soap Awards. She also appeared in the ITV medical drama Doc Martin as Martin Clunes’s aunt, and voiced the character Carolyn Knapp-Shappey in the BBC Radio 4 sitcom Cabin Pressure. Additional television appearances included Keeping Mum, Midsomer Murders, Doctors, Gentleman Jack, and The Cleaner in 2021.

Cole’s theatrical career included performances in Driving Miss Daisy, Noises Off, King Lear, and A Passionate Woman, which she identified as a career highlight. She returned to her debut role in Blithe Spirit at the West End’s Savoy Theatre in 2004. Cole was married twice: first to playwright Henry Marshall, whom she divorced in 1988, and later to fellow actor Peter Birrel in 1998, whom she had first worked with decades earlier at Bristol Old Vic. Birrel died in 2004. Cole is survived by her daughter Emma Battcock. She was appointed an OBE in 2005 for her contributions to drama, services to the elderly, and support of mental health charities.
