Researchers identified a dose-dependent relationship, meaning cardiovascular event rates increased alongside higher xylitol blood levels. The association held consistent across different demographic groups and remained independent of other risk factors including body mass index, hypertension, diabetes and lipid levels.
Dr. Marco Witkowski from Charité university hospital in Berlin, the study’s lead author, noted that previous research had demonstrated xylitol’s ability to enhance platelet clotting. He stated that the long-term findings highlight gaps in knowledge about xylitol’s cardiovascular safety, particularly given increasing amounts in consumer products.
Experts cautioned that the observational study demonstrates association rather than causation and emphasized the need for additional research. Public health officials noted the importance of reducing processed food consumption while avoiding increased sugar intake as an alternative to artificially sweetened products.
