Amazon Prime Video has greenlit three new Australian original docuseries as part of its ongoing investment in regional content production. The commissioning represents a continuation of the streamer’s strategy to develop locally-rooted programming with international appeal.
The Test will return for its fourth season, following the Australian men’s cricket team through an intensive schedule during 2026-27 that encompasses tours to South Africa and India, a special 150th Anniversary Test match against England, and the 2027 Ashes campaign. The docuseries, produced by Amazon MGM Studios in partnership with Cricket Australia and Whooshka Media, will document a transitional period for the team as experienced players age and the program works to integrate younger talent amid public and media pressure. A premiere date for the new season has not yet been announced, though the series will be available globally.
Prime Video also commissioned Free Spirits: The Backpacker Poisonings, a true crime limited series from Cineflix that examines a tragedy involving eight backpackers traveling through Southeast Asia in late 2024. The three-part docuseries draws on personal footage and testimony from survivors and victims’ families to explore events surrounding the deaths of six travelers and the permanent injury sustained by another.
The third commission is Madness of Three, a five-part true crime docuseries produced by Blackfella Films examining the 2022 Wieambilla shootings in Queensland. The series provides an in-depth examination of the events and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Sarah Christie, head of Australian and New Zealand originals at Amazon MGM Studios, stated that the commissions reflect the company’s commitment to developing Australian stories that appeal to both local and global audiences. Prime Video has commissioned 34 Australian originals since 2019, with previous successes including The Narrow Road to the Deep North and Deadloch achieving international viewership.
