The Tokyo International Film Festival has revealed the Gala and Animation program segments for its 39th iteration, presenting a curated collection of recent festival entries, internationally recognized films and prominent Japanese animated productions. The festival will take place later this month.
The Gala Selection comprises 15 titles spanning multiple regions and genres. International standouts include Martin McDonagh’s black comedy featuring John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Steve Buscemi; Tony Gilroy’s thriller with Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde; and Michael Showalter’s adaptation based on a Colleen Hoover novel, headlined by Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. The lineup incorporates several notable Asian productions, including works set in Taiwan and Tokyo as well as a Cannes Film Festival standout. Additional entries encompass diverse storytelling approaches across drama and comedy.
The animation program features 12 selections ranging from major Japanese studio productions to international animated works. Among the announced titles is an original anthology feature from director Atsushi Nishigori produced by CloverWorks, the studio responsible for ‘Spy x Family’ and ‘Bocchi the Rock!’. The program also includes an original feature from director Shingo Natsume produced by Madhouse, a DreamWorks Animation title, and a three-film sidebar dedicated to female directors.
The festival will host a special component centered on the Displacement Film Fund, a filmmaking initiative co-founded by Cate Blanchett. The programming includes five shorts backed by the fund alongside a moderated discussion featuring Blanchett and two acclaimed Middle Eastern filmmakers. Blanchett’s attendance coincides with her receipt of the Praemium Imperiale, Japan’s annual international arts honor recognizing lifetime achievement across disciplines including film.
The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival runs October 26 through November 4, with the accompanying TIFFCOM market scheduled for October 28-30. The festival’s opening, centerpiece and closing films have been previously announced.
