Toronto Builds Its One-Stop Shop

The Toronto Film Festival is introducing TIFF: The Market this year, positioning itself as a centralized hub for the global media industry. The initiative includes two distinct marketplaces: one focused on development-stage projects across film, television series, and immersive content, and another featuring completed works ready for acquisition and distribution.

As part of this expansion, TIFF has incorporated the International Financing & Project Market, taking over operations of what was previously the International Financing Forum, a 20-year-old co-production event managed by Ontario Creates. The provincial media support agency continues as a presenting partner in the restructured IFPM. According to Geoff Macnaughton, vice president of market programming at TIFF, the dual-market approach addresses industry needs in an increasingly fragmented media landscape where projects may develop across multiple formats and platforms.

The television programming at this year’s festival includes several notable series: Mike Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation for Prime Video, American Hostage for MGM+, and Yaga featuring Carrie-Anne Moss. The IFPM slate comprises primarily film projects alongside six television series and five innovation-focused ventures, reflecting the festival’s broader effort to welcome creators and financiers working across different media types.

Macnaughton emphasized that the market structure accommodates evolving industry dynamics, where streaming platforms now maintain robust acquisition teams and independent producers face different competitive pressures than in previous years. Rather than attempting to reshape how the industry operates, TIFF aims to provide infrastructure that aligns with current market demands, including support for projects at earlier development stages and cross-platform opportunities for intellectual property.
