Parallax Films, an international sales company specializing in Asian cinema, has taken on global distribution rights for ‘Aman,’ a 16-minute short film written and directed by Rahul Roye. The film centers on a transgender man who discovers he is pregnant as he approaches his gender-affirming surgery.
The project is a co-production involving the United Kingdom, United States, India, and France, filmed in Hindi and Bengali. It will premiere in the Short Cuts competition at the Toronto Film Festival before traveling to the BFI London Film Festival, where it will screen in the competition section dedicated to selecting 10 shorts from around the world.
Parallax Films founder Liuying Cao described the film as ambitious yet emotionally grounded, noting its exploration of intimate personal experiences within broader social and political contexts. The production team includes executive producers Nikkhil Advani and Dominique Welinski, with producing credits going to Apoorva Bakshi, Elle León Nostas, Neeraj Churi, Tushar Tyagi, and Abid Aziz Merchant.
The cast features Kabir Maan, a transgender activist making his acting debut in the lead role, alongside Sirat Taneja, Guntaj Deep Singh, and Satakshi Nandy. Taneja previously appeared in Deepa Mehta’s documentary work. Director Roye stated that the film aims to create space for identities and bodies that resist easy categorization, using pregnancy as a lens to examine the constructed nature of gender definitions.
The film has received support from the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for the Arts, the Keshav Suri Foundation, and the Kashish Q Drishti Film Grant through the Kashish Arts Foundation, with additional backing from Renuka Shahane and Lotus Visual Productions. This represents Roye’s third short film following ‘Man & Wife’ and ‘A Lullaby for Yellow Roses.’
