Men with cardiovascular disease showed particularly increased mortality risk from gastric, oesophageal, and lung cancers relative to those without the condition. The findings were published in the European Heart Journal.

Researchers noted that overlapping risk factors between cardiovascular disease and cancer likely contribute to the observed associations. Dr. Tiberiu Pana, a cardiology specialist at NHS Grampian, emphasized that the extended timeframe and large patient population enabled more thorough examination of gender differences across multiple cancer types. Professor Mamas Mamas of Keele University called for expanded research to clarify mechanisms underlying increased cancer risk in cardiac patients and urged development of clinical pathways to identify and prevent cancer in those with existing heart conditions.

Public health guidance emphasizes that individuals concerned about cancer or heart disease risk can reduce their likelihood through smoking cessation, weight management, and alcohol moderation.
