US Defense officials have framed the initiative, designated “Operation Southern Spear” and initiated in early September, as an effort to eliminate drug-trafficking threats to American security. The Pentagon has not, however, provided comprehensive evidence demonstrating the trafficking involvement of all targeted vessels. Legal experts have questioned the operations’ compliance with international standards since their commencement, prompting criticism from Latin American governments.
