Why AMD's new $1 trillion valuation makes perfect sense

AMD achieved a historic milestone on Monday when its market capitalization crossed the $1 trillion threshold for the first time, with the stock climbing 9.9% during a broader technology sector rally. The company’s year-to-date stock performance has significantly outpaced rival Nvidia, with shares rising 185% compared to a 22% gain for the competitor.

The chipmaker’s strong valuation reflects a series of operational and financial achievements throughout the year. In its second-quarter results released earlier in the month, AMD exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates on both earnings and revenue. The company reported non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.66 against expectations of $1.61, while total revenue reached a record $11.5 billion, surpassing analyst projections of approximately $11.34 billion. Revenue expanded 50% year over year, driven predominantly by the Data Center segment, which more than doubled to $6.7 billion fueled by strong demand for EPYC server processors and Instinct AI accelerators.

Looking ahead, AMD provided projections indicating accelerating growth. The company forecasted second-half 2026 server CPU revenue would expand 80% year over year, with further acceleration anticipated in 2027 at 70% growth. Data center revenues are expected to more than double in 2027, with AI graphics processing units projected to grow well over 100%. These growth expectations underscore management’s confidence in sustained demand for its products.

AMD also announced new product lines and strategic partnerships during the reporting period. The company unveiled next-generation AI chips including the Instinct MI450 Series GPUs and 6th Gen EPYC Venice CPUs, designed to power the Helios rack-scale AI systems. Microsoft committed to deploying Helios across Azure AI services beginning in the second half of 2026, while Anthropic announced plans to deploy up to 2 gigawatts of the Instinct MI450 GPUs beginning in the first half of 2027 in a deal potentially worth tens of billions over time. AMD also committed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of the expanded partnership.
