The resulting feature-length documentary takes viewers through Zumthor’s career, spanning from his early works such as the St. Benedict’s chapel, completed in 1988, to more recent projects including a memorial for burned witches in the Arctic Circle and the David Geffen Galleries at Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The LACMA galleries, completed recently, represent Zumthor’s largest building to date and was commissioned nearly two decades prior. Brad Pitt, an admirer of Zumthor’s work who supported his LACMA bid, has joined the project as an executive producer.
Wenders chose to shoot the documentary in 3D, a decision he connected to his earlier work on choreography. He explained that three-dimensional filmmaking allowed him to represent architectural space more authentically than traditional two-dimensional cinematography could achieve. The director emphasized his identification with Zumthor’s creative approach, noting that both believe artistic work continues to evolve during the production process rather than being finalized during the planning stages. Wenders stressed that filmmaking and architecture share this common ground: the freedom to refine and improve the work as it is being realized, rather than adhering rigidly to an initial blueprint or script.
