
Scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed what they describe as a groundbreaking vaccine using artificial intelligence to design its key component, marking the first time such a design has been tested in human trials. The vaccine was engineered to target all coronaviruses, including all Covid variants and animal viruses with pandemic potential.
The research team analyzed genetic codes from various coronaviruses identified through surveillance programs and used AI to design a “super-antigen” capable of training the immune system to protect against the entire coronavirus family, even accounting for mutations or novel spillover events. According to Prof Jonathan Heeney from Cambridge, this represents a fundamental shift in pandemic preparedness by enabling vaccines to target potential future threats rather than only current strains.
Early-stage human trials involving 39 participants assessed vaccine safety, with findings published in the Journal of Infection showing “modest” immune system impacts. A second trial with approximately 200 participants will evaluate how effectively the vaccine trains immune responses. Prof Saul Faust, who conducted trials at the University of Southampton, noted the AI design approach shows particular promise for developing vaccines against rapidly changing viruses.
The Cambridge team is expanding the technology to other disease areas, conducting animal research on universal seasonal flu vaccines requiring no annual reformulation and an H5N1 bird flu vaccine. They are also investigating vaccines for viral hemorrhagic fevers including Ebola species. Experts outside the study, including Prof Andy Pollard of the Oxford Vaccine Group and Marian Knight of the National Institute for Health and Care Research, highlighted the potential of AI-designed vaccines to accelerate development timelines and improve immune response prediction.
