World’s largest contract chipmaker TSMC sees August revenue surge over 53% to record high

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced record monthly revenue for August, reflecting continued strength in demand for chips powering artificial intelligence applications. The company reported revenue of $514.8 billion New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to $16.35 billion, representing a 53.3% increase compared to the same month the previous year and a 10.1% rise from July.

The revenue milestone marked the fourth consecutive month of growth for the world’s largest contract chipmaker. TSMC shares declined 0.61% on Thursday as the revenue figures were released. During its second-quarter earnings call in July, the company had indicated that demand related to artificial intelligence remained “extremely robust,” and the company forecast third-quarter revenue between $44.6 billion and $45.8 billion.

TSMC maintained its commanding position in the global foundry market, controlling 72.5% market share in the second quarter according to data from TrendForce. The company’s advanced manufacturing capacity at 5-, 4-, and 3-nanometer nodes remained fully utilized during the period. Samsung Foundry held the second-largest share at 5.9%, followed by China’s SMIC with 5.4%. The top 10 foundries worldwide posted combined second-quarter revenue approaching $53.49 billion, supported by supply constraints affecting advanced processes used in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing applications.

Separately, TSMC and Dutch equipment manufacturer ASML this week unveiled an initiative designed to advance industry transition to next-generation chipmaking technology. TSMC indicated plans to incorporate ASML’s High NA technology into large-scale manufacturing for advanced nodes commencing in 2030, with adoption expected to expand as artificial intelligence applications demand increasingly complex transistor designs.
