PlayStation has ended its publishing relationship with Kojima Productions, prompting the studio to secure a new deal with Xbox for Physint, an action-espionage title in development.
Sony, which previously published both Death Stranding games, described the decision as difficult but maintained that the companies’ relationship remains intact. Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima stated that Sony delivered a cancellation notice in June, after which the studio spent three months identifying an alternative publishing partner. The deal with Xbox emerged amid existing collaboration between the two companies, as Xbox is already scheduled to publish the studio’s next project, OD.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma framed the acquisition as aligned with the company’s strategic priorities. In a statement, she emphasized Xbox’s commitment to supporting ambitious creators and noted that the partnership reflects Kojima’s approach to challenging industry conventions. The announcement also indicated plans extending beyond video games, with film and television projects under development, though specific details remain undisclosed.
Kojima Productions has pursued multimedia expansion since 2021, with two Death Stranding adaptations currently in development: an animated spinoff titled Mosquito and a live-action film directed by the filmmaker behind Pig. Physint, described as a genre-defining action-espionage experience, is not expected to release until at least 2030. OD, the horror title announced in 2022, is anticipated to arrive at an earlier date, with its first trailer having premiered the previous year.
