2 New Members Join Association of American Universities

The Association of American Universities announced Thursday that Georgetown University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham have accepted invitations to join the organization. The additions bring the AAU’s total membership count to 73 institutions.

AAU membership is granted by invitation only and requires institutions to meet specific research and educational standards established by the organization. The association focuses on advancing higher education and supporting research and innovation activities that contribute to economic development, medical breakthroughs, agricultural improvements, and national security initiatives.

Georgetown University President Eduardo M. Peñalver expressed that the institution was honored by the invitation, noting that Georgetown’s research spans natural and biomedical sciences, social sciences, and humanities. He stated that joining the AAU would help amplify the university’s research mission in building knowledge and improving communities.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham becomes the first institution in Alabama to achieve AAU membership. UAB President Ray L. Watts attributed the achievement to the efforts of the university’s faculty and staff, as well as support from public and private partners and the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees. He indicated the university looks forward to contributing to the AAU’s mission.

AAU President Barbara R. Snyder welcomed both universities in a statement, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to advancing higher education and fostering research and innovation that drives improvements across multiple sectors including the economy, medicine, agriculture, and military operations.
